Book Review: The Buccaneer of Nemaris

I recently discovered this wonderful book, perfect for kids ages 10 and up. It is a sweeping adventure of sailing on the high seas, outsmarting pirates, and romance with mermaids. Written by J.D. Delzer, this tale follows the story of fourteen year old Thomas DeLeuit growing up in a small harbor town in a fantasy world.

The Buccaneer of Nemaris

When a familiar sea captain arrives in town, Thomas gets to opportunity of a lifetime to follow in his father’s footsteps as a cabin boy about the merchant ship the Valiant. Along the way, he learns the ways of a sailor as well as the legacy of his father who was lost at sea before he was born.

Before long, the crew is shipwrecked on the dreaded Nemaris islands, feared to be inhabited by foul demons, magical creatures, and a powerful wizard. While exploring the island, Thomas encounters an enchanting mermaid named Acadia. Quickly, the two start a budding romance as the men learn to survive on the bewitched island. But when sinister pirates come looking for the wizard’s treasure, they must work together to stay alive and discover Thomas’ true legacy.

This book was a captivating read that had me quickly turning the page to find out what happens next. The introduction to sailing on the high seas was so wonderful that it had me longing to get out on boat myself. The world created by the author is so real and expansive that I felt like I was there.

I especially love the romance between Thomas and Acadia. It was so natural and innocent. It brought me back to my youth when I first started dating. I have never really be interested in mermaids myself, but the youthful courtship had me longing to meet one.

The adventure is intelligent with real characters who were wise enough not to resort to a sword fight to resolve every dispute.

I highly recommend this book to everyone young and old.
